Greenways Poland Association was established in 2014 in Nałęczów by initiators and promoters of Greenways in Poland. Its aim is to promote, support, and develop the Greenways concept, including sustainable tourism, with a particular emphasis on ecotourism and heritage tourism.

The philosophy, methodology, and standards of Greenways development were introduced and adapted to Polish conditions between 2001 and 2011 by the former Environmental Partnership Foundation (Fundacja Partnerstwo dla Środowiska) as part of the Central & Eastern European Greenways initiative. The approach was based on the experience of American Greenways and developed in cooperation with William Moody and Krystyna Wolniakowski.

The establishment of the Greenways initiative in Poland was made possible thanks to financial and technical support from the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, as well as other donors, including the DOEN Foundation, the Trust for Mutual Understanding, the C.S. Mott Foundation, and many others.
